Lead Engineer, Advanced Manufacturing
Swindt Butterfield led the advanced composites research and development effort at UAM startup Kitty Hawk for nearly 8 years. With the goal of identifying methods for making aerospace-quality composite airframes quickly and cost-effectively, Swindt oversaw construction and commissioning of Kitty Hawk’s high-rate composites pilot plant and then led the subsequent R&D effort exploring a wide range of materials, processes, tooling and sensor systems.
In his previous role with Kitty Hawk (then known as Zee Aero), he established the company’s original composite manufacturing facility, hired the composite manufacturing team, and led the build of the first two full-scale technical demonstrator eVTOL airframes.
Prior to joining Zee Aero in February 2013, Swindt worked as a design engineer for Swift Engineering on a wide range of projects including a three-wheeled concept car, a personal jet, two electric motorcycles, an autonomous submersible, and a variety of UAVs.
Like Steve Jobs, Swindt is a liberal arts graduate (Kenyon College) working at the intersection of art and technology with a passionate belief in the power of new ideas to make the world a better place for all.
