Composites Market Outlook

Tuesday November 15th | 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
The hydrogen (H2) economy is advancing rapidly, with H2 being established as a zero-emission commercial fuel for industry, stationary power and mobility applications. As part of strategies to keep global warming below 1.5°C, governments and industry are funding and scaling green H2 generation, refueling infrastructure and production of H2 fuel cell and combustion engine-powered mobility — including cars, trucks, buses, trains, forklifts, heavy equipment, marine vessels and aircraft. These require storage and transport of H2 as a compressed gas (CGH2) and/or cryogenic liquid (LH2).
Composite pressure vessels are a well-proven solution, used for decades to store CGH2 in cars, trucks and forklifts via 350- and 700-bar tanks. As manufacturers of CGH2 fuel systems and composite tanks project a CAGR >70% to 2025 and a 10X increase in the market to 2030, increased demand for high-strength carbon fiber is already creating a shortage in supply. However, lower-cost and/or higher-density solutions that could use more metal than composites are being driven by the high price of carbon fiber coupled with the low volumetric capacity of CGH2 and cryogenic challenges of LH2. This presentation will discuss the emerging market for carbon fiber in the H2 economy as well as the technical, manufacturing, industrialization and economic challenges it faces and solutions being explored by industry leaders.

Market Overview 2022: Carbon Fiber In Our Changing World
Dan Pichler, CarbConsult GmbH
Tony Roberts, AJR Consultants
Tuesday November 15th | 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
COVID! War in Ukraine! Energy supply and prices! Inflation! Jobs! Political change! Our world seems to be changing rapidly and dramatically in 2022. How are these overriding themes impacting the world of carbon fiber? Tony Roberts and Dan Pichler apply their 80 years of combined industry experience to dive deep into the market and shed some light on what is happening in the world of carbon fiber. Tony and Dan examine key market segments for carbon fiber: aerospace, sporting goods, wind and other industrial market segments to help develop an overall perspective and understanding of the market. In addition, they look at available capacity versus demand, which is a particularly relevant topic in 2022.
